First Release: July 15, 2020   |   Updated August 12, 2020

These are the procedures that will be implemented that directly affect the Middle Schoolers (7th and 8th grade):

  • Middle School students are required to wear face masks (shields - only with permission), but teachers will allow for “mask breaks” when the risk is low (i.e. when students are outside, socially distanced, or alone).
  • Several of the Middle School classrooms have sinks for handwashing.Touchless soap dispensers will be installed in these areas.
  • Touchless hand sanitizers will be implemented in classrooms without sinks.
  • Middle School students will use the bathrooms in the Upper School hallway. No more than 2 students are allowed in the bathroom at a time.
  • Middle schoolers will not use the phone booth in the office. They will place their phones in a localized spot in the classrooms.
  • Middle Schoolers will have lunch in the Library (or outside). We will still have Pizza Mondays; pizza will be delivered to the students in the Library. Taco Tuesdays will be postponed until further notice.
  • Middle School teachers will take advantage of outdoor classrooms whenever possible.
  • PE will be held outdoors as much as possible; however, our gym is acceptable capacity-wise. This year, the PE program does not require Middle Schoolers to change into PE uniforms.
  • Interims for the 2020-21 school year are still pending.
  • Clubs will likely be high school only; we will create separate opportunities for middle school.
  • Middle School will participate in limited electives within their cohorts.
  • Our traditional Morning Meetings in the Meeting Room for all Upper Schoolers will be altered to reduce the size of the gathering. Middle Schoolers will have Morning Meeting every morning in Dr. Austin’s classroom.
  • Middle Schoolers will not join the weekly Upper School Advisory Meetings on Tuesdays and Fridays.
  • The Middle School Outdoor Ed trip planning has been paused. We will reevaluate in the fall.
  • Arrival and dismissal for Middle School will be at the Upper Level Main Entrance. Face masks/shields are required when entering and leaving the building.
  • Parents are asked to drop students off at the door.
  • Parents may come to the office if necessary, but in general are not allowed in the rest of the building.
  • Only a limited number of non-essential adults are allowed in the building. Face masks/shields are required for all visitors entering the building.
  • No large group events will be held, such as back-to-school events, etc.
  • We will have fall Parent-Teacher Conferences either in person with face masks/shields and/or via Zoom.
  • We are offering an @Home online learning program for those families who do not feel comfortable with their children returning to the classroom at the start of the school year. Registration is required and involves a commitment for the first quarter (August 26-October 16).
